spring equinox
do. jong-hwan/translated by shin, byung-chul
i guess a spring rain has fallen at midnight.
the yard is a little wet
i didn’t hear the rain fall while i was sleeping,
but when a small bird, like a wren, flew from a tree
i heard a few raindrops hidden on its bark
fall, rapping on the lower branches
the flower buds of a chinese quince sparkle
all green here and there after sticking out their tongues,
lapping the rain up and wiping their lips
today i intend to do the old laundry
and wash my clothes soaked with medicine.
