전국 시대(戰國 時代)에는 육국(六國)이 소진(蘇秦)의 합종술(合縱術)을 받아들여 서로 연합하여 진(秦)나라에 대항하였으므로 진(秦)나라는 감히 육국(六國)을 공격할 뜻을 갖지 못했다. 장의(張儀)는 연횡술(連橫術)을 주장한 자로 진(秦)나라를 도와 육국(六國)의 연맹을 무너뜨리려 했다. 그는 먼저 위(魏)나라에 가서 위왕(魏王)에게 말하기를, “귀국(貴國)은 초(楚), 한(漢), 조(趙), 제(齊)의 네 나라 사이에 처해있으므로 어떤 한 나라와도 사이가 나빠지면 그 네 나라는 틀림없이 귀국(貴國)을 침공할 것입니다. 그들 나라가 하나로 뭉치는 것은 결국 귀국(貴國)을 여러 갈래로 분열시키는 결과를 초래할 것입니다. 게다가 육국(六國)의 동맹은 일시적인 방편인지라 진나라와 연합하여 위(魏)나라를 패망의 위기에서 구하는 것이 낫습니다.” 위왕(魏王)은 그에게 설복당하고 말았다. 장의(張儀)는 각 국의 이기적인 생각을 이용하여 똑같은 방법으로 각 나라의 왕들을 부추켜서 마침내 육국(六國)의 동맹을 와해시키고 말았다. 소진(蘇秦)의 합종술(合縱術)은 철저히 실패로 돌아갔다.

during the warring states period, the state of jin dared not attack the other six states rashly because they had adopted sojin's vertical theory and united to resist jin together. jangyi was an advocate of the horizontal theory, and he planned to help jin disrupt the alliance. he went to wi first and said to the king, “your state is with the four states: cho, han, jo, and je. whichever state you fall out with, the four states are certain to attack you. to unite with them will result in the split of your state into many parts in the end. besides, the alliance of the six states is only a temporary solution. it would be better to ally with jin to avoid the fall of your own state.” the king was convinced.
taking advantage of the selfish consideration of each state, jangyi used the same method to convince the rulers of the other states and the alliance finally disintegrated. sojin's vertical theory turned out to be a complete failure.
